Highlights of some of RFE's recent activity

  • RFE was invited to the United Cities and Local Governments Congress (UNESCO) inMexico City, and represented CMARD inNanjingChina where the Racism Free Edmonton Action Plan was presented to international audiences.
  •  RFE presented at the Senate of Canada’s Social Affairs, Science and Technology Committee about howEdmonton is working toward inclusion of immigrants in a large Canadian city.
  •  The I’m Committed to a Racism Free Edmonton Public Awareness Campaign engaged 24,000 individual Edmontonians who made commitments to take personal action to eliminate racism.
  • RFE is included as a municipal best practice in toolkits published by UNESCO and the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.
  • The Eliminating Racism: Education for Action program has delivered 27 full-day and five half-day sessions to over 400 participants within some ofEdmonton’s major institutions.
  • Community meetings were held where residents discussed ways to work toward building a common vision for a Racism Free Edmonton.
  • Through theUniversityofAlberta’s Population Research Laboratory, anEdmontonCitysurvey gathered data on Edmontonians’ experiences of discrimination and perceptions of racism.
  • A Diversity Tournament brought youth from different cultures together to develop intercultural awareness through sports programming.
  • Ongoing public anti-racism sessions for adults increase knowledge and create a space for positive dialogue. 
  • High school students participated in a forum with Councilor Amarjeet Sohi where the issue of racism in schools was discussed.
  • Workshops were delivered by the business sector that enabled non-Aboriginal businesses to gain an understanding of Aboriginal beliefs, values, and communication styles.
  • An Equity, Diversity, and Human Rights Unit was created within one of RFE’s partner institutions.
  • A multiculturalism awareness campaign for youth supported the International Day for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination.  Workshops, film festivals, art projects promoted awareness of diverse cultures.
